Final Reflection:

Its no surprise that the world we live in is currently rapidly moving into a more digital era, the fact that information is readily available at the touch of a button suggests that we as educators do indeed need to get on board with this rapid digital movement. Although there are a combination of positives and negatives in regards to moving towards a more digital setting it needs to be said that once again the day and age we live in is rapidly becoming more digital over the other alternatives. With this being the world we live in its not surprise that the education setting also needs to move towards a more digital world as well.

Through the creation of this blog many online and digital technologies have been used, and to be honest personally I have struggled to wrap my head around them. In saying this though I have seen how my understanding of the digital technologies and also why it is vital to use in classroom has also increased. I Thoroughly enjoyed the use of the auditory task, as a visual and auditory learner I found that the use of Powtoon really did help me create and present in a way in which I found to be engaging and also stimulating. When considering future teaching I would highly consider the use of this digital technology as it helped me better understand the topic that I was focusing on.

In a recent article by Mal Lee in 2015, reinforces the idea that students and technology in the 21st century go hand in hand. He goes onto suggest that through research it can be said that both students and teachers felt as though having digital technologies readily available ultimately helped with the overall academic success.

In conclusion, through looking at all of the digital technologies and also at all of the evidence it can be said that moving towards a digital classroom would indeed be the wisest decision. A digital classroom is one that I personally am excited about, having gone through the school system not being super digital it makes me excited to see that the educational system is moving more towards a digital way of education.

INTRO:

In the year 2000 there were approximately 414 million internet users, in the year 2016 there are approximately 3 and a half and counting!!!

That is a drastic increase and with this dramatic increase comes a whole lot of online issues. Digital identities and digital security are now becoming something that every internet user needs to be made aware of, so maybe its time that we educate ourselves on why these topics are rapidly becoming two of the most pressing online issues.

Digital Identity:

A digital identity is an identity that a person claims on an online forum. Through the different social media outlets people can create more then one online identity. Meaning that you can use one social media outlet for a more public space to share ideas with the world and one for a more private use sharing ideas with personal friends and family. It’s important to protect your digital identity and remember that once something is out there online its there for everyone to see.

Digital security:

Doctor Jennifer Howell describes digital security as the pushing out and receiving of information. Digital security links to the digital identity as it is vital that all internet users keep personal details safe and secure. In the digital age we live in keeping our digital identities safe and also protected needs to be vitally important.

Digital footprint:

A digital footprint is everything that you leave behind on any online forum. With social media being all the rage it is important to be mindful of what you are posting online. Once something is out there for the world to see it is extremely hard to take it back and pretend that it never happened.Your digital footprint traces back to you, so be mindful of what you are posting online.

What is a digital world?

WRITTEN SUMMATION:

Laura Gallo (2013) begins her recent article by making an obvious but true statement about the digital world we live in regarding students: “Even if teens are not on a digital device, they are surrounded by images, links, and references related to staying connected and being in the “know” through the Internet, cell phones, and other devices.” Gallo goes on to point out that students in this day and age are not willing to put away the devices despite the possibly negative situations that are derived from online consumption, therefore, the onus falls on us as the adults to become familiar with the different forms of the digital world.

DIGITAL EDUCATION:

The idea of digital education has always been a discussion point, recently however, it has been highlighted as the future of classroom education. The idea that students can learn in ways that are engaging, stimulating and also relevant to their world has been one of the major talking points and according to academic sources there has been noticeable success with teachers moving into the direction of digital education. One of these sources includes the department of education and training, they go on to say that “Digital learning occurs across all learning areas and domains.”

BENEFITS OF DIGITAL LEARNING:

Tony Hicks (2013) makes the following statement regarding technology based learning “Technology in education opens up a huge world of possibilities as to how we convey, share and engage with students presenting different ideas, facts and theories.” As an educator, it is vital to understand  and to give each and every student the opportunity within the classroom to respond using a pathway that they find best showcases their learning. Through experience in classrooms I have seen that students know all to well how to navigate their way around technology and when given the opportunity to present work within the classroom through different forms of media they will all too quickly jump at the chance!

DIGITAL CLASSROOMS:

A digital classroom is just that, a classroom where the focus is still on the curriculum however, the curriculum is presented in a technological way. Students understand that technology is the way of the future! It not only effects the way we communicate but as educators it also effects the way in which we approach our teaching. What if students where able to pick which way they presented a topic or piece of assessment? A digital classroom should be a place where the students have that availability to share with their peers in a way that they find best showcases their learning and understanding.

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion it can be argued that technology can indeed help further the academic success of students, however, there are still many things to take into account regarding the topic. In saying that, there are still unquestionable positives that come from moving toward a more digital environment. We live in a digital world where we are immersed with digital technologies on a daily basis, it’s the direction that the future is heading and as future educators it is of vital importance to see how beneficial digital technologies within the classroom can be.
